Birse Rail awarded £12.4m Walsall and Cannock Resignalling Renewal civils contract

Birse Rail has been awarded a £12.4m contract by Network Rail for the Civil Engineering works in relation to the Walsall and Cannock Lines Signalling Renewal project.

The project will deliver increased reliability to the signalling equipment and also increased capacity for trains on the Walsall and Cannock Lines which will benefit the passenger and freight traffic on these routes.

The scope of works for the new resignalling contract includes three signal gantries, 121 signal posts, ground works and foundations, 30 Under Track Crossings (UTXs), 7360 metres of buried cable route, 137 line side equipment cases, 14 Relocatable Equipment Buildings (REBs) /Principal Supply Points (PSP), the upgrading of two level crossings, the recovery of redundant signal equipment and the demolition of  five signal boxes with the control of the signalling equipment being transferred to a new state of the art Signalling Centre at Saltley in Birmingham.

The design phase for the Civil Engineering works, which is being undertaken in-house by the Birse Rail Consultancy team in Birmingham, is currently underway with construction due to commence in January/February next year in line with the Network Rail programme.
