Birse Rail awarded ‘Access For All’ scheme at Farnborough Station

Birse Rail has been awarded a contract to deliver ‘Access for All’ work at Farnborough Station in Hampshire.

The £1.8m contract was awarded by Network Rail to design and build a new 36.5m continuous span steel vierendeel truss footbridge, with two lifts to provide step-free access between platforms 1 and 2.  The new structure crosses the four-line railway between Woking and Basingstoke on the London Waterloo to Southampton line.  The scope of works also includes the demolition of the existing station footbridge, installation of tactile paving, a power upgrade and extension of platform 2 over a redundant siding.

Design works for the scheme are being undertaken in-house by Birse Rail Consultancy.

The scheme has been commissioned as part of a wider portfolio of similar projects to be delivered over the next 2-3 years under the Government’s ‘Access for All’ programme.  This national programme is the successor to the former DDA Framework under which Birse Rail was a National Framework Contractor.

Commenting on the award, Martin White, Head of Birse Rail said: “We are delighted to be awarded this project by Network Rail.  A key factor in our successful award was our alternative tender submission which clearly demonstrated an in-depth understanding of the challenges associated with the project.”
