Birse Rail awarded Light Maintenance Depot contract as part of pollution prevention programme October 2004 |
Birse Rail was recently awarded the £23m Southern slice of the Light Maintenance
Depot Project from Network Rail.
The project is an exciting initiative and is part of the Pollution Prevention National
Programme operated by Network Rail encompassing 20 depots from as far west as
Penzance to as far east as Norwich.

August blockade – resourced and planned to perfection by Birse Rail September 2004 |
After a great deal of planning and resource management the blockade on the
West Coast Main Line took place from Saturday 28th August – Sunday 5th
September and has been hailed a tremendous achievement for Birse Rail.
David Winter, Network Rail’s Programme Manager praised the team saying,
“Congratulations to everyone involved in the blockade works. Successfully completing nine
major bridge projects over such a tight programme is a fantastic achievement and a
testament to excellent planning, teamwork and commitment.”

Birse Rail awarded reactive earthworks contract for 2004/5 July 2004 |
Earlier this month Birse Rail was awarded an Emergency Earthworks Framework
Contract for 2004/5 for the Great Western Territory. This is in addition to the
Earthworks Framework Contract already held in the Midlands. The work
encompasses remediation of embankment and cutting slope failures where
urgent or emergency works are required to ensure line safety.

Birse Rail use Ameca machines to aid waterproofing viaduct during West Coast Main Line blockade June 2004 |
Earlier this month Birse Rail successfully completed the waterproofing of the River
Nene Viaduct in Northampton during the 9 day West Coast Main Line blockade.
Conventional removal of P-Way with either roadrailers and labour or a cranelift could not
be utilised because of the time constraint of 72 hours allowed in the blockade.

ICE rewards ingenuity to a winning combination – Birse Rail and Owen Williams May 2004 |

Birse Rail lifts new footbridge at Wolverhampton in time for the new platform May 2004 |
00.45 Saturday morning on May 22nd saw Birse Rail commence a 54-hour rail
possession that necessitated the closure of Wolverhampton station to achieve an
impressive bridge lift as part of their contract with Network Rail to redevelop the
station. With the BBC, Central Television and local newspaper showing great
interest hundreds of interested locals watched the lift proceed without a hitch.

Wednesday May 12th was the date for the annual RoSPA Awards. Held at the
Metropole Hotel in Birmingham the awards ceremony celebrated excellence and
commitment in safe working practices across the industry.
Birse Rail was awarded one of the highest accolades open to it – the Construction
Industry Sector Award. The award recognizes the commitment and investment the
company has made over the past year towards its stringent health and safety programmes.

Birse Rail delivers Cherwell Valley scheme and time and on budget May 2004 |
Birse Rail began work in May 2003 to introduce new LED signals throughout the
Cherwell Valley Route between Banbury and Leamington Spa.
Completed in under a year; the 20-mile scheme is a remarkable success story considering
that most of the work was carried out on Saturday evenings - the only ‘no-train’ time
on this route. The existing signalling also had to remain operational throughout the
duration of the works.
