Birse Rail was a national framework contractor for Network Rail, delivering step-free access to stations across the network to ensure compliance with the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA).
The works at each station typically included:
- Fabrication and installation of new footbridges.
- Provision of liftshafts and lifts to all platforms.
- Subway modifications.
- Station building modifications to allow disabled access.
- Tactile paving to platform edges and lift entrances.
- Mechanical and electrical (M&E) installations, including new and upgraded power supplies, control and power to the lifts, lift plant, footbridge lighting.
- Demolition of existing non-compliant structures.
- Other station enhancements such as lighting and CCTV incorporated concurrently with the programme.

Haslemere Station: Fabrication and installation of steel footbridge, stairs and liftshafts, cladding, new lifts and liftshafts, tactile paving, plant room and M&E works.
Staplehurst Station: Fabrication and installation of steel footbridge, stairs and liftshafts, cladding, new lifts and liftshafts, tactile paving, plant room and M&E works.
Oxted Station: New lift and liftshaft from car park to station building, plant room and M&E works.
Orpington Station: Construction of new footbridge, three lift shafts and stair access to island platforms including associated groundworks and electrical installation (excluding lift installation). Installation of 2km of tactile paving.
Bracknell Station: Construction of new single span steel footbridge, lift shafts and stair access between platforms 1 & 2 at Bracknell Station including associated groundworks and electrical installation (excluding lift installation). Installation of tactile paving.
Kidderminster Station: Installation of steel / clad footbridge with masonry lift shafts over two tracks with steel / clad stairs, installation of tactile paving and ramps to station building.
Motherwell Station: Construction of new footbridge, lift shafts and stair access to island platforms including associated groundworks and electrical installation (excluding lift installation).
Rutherglen Station: Construction of new station buildings, lift shaft, low and high level walkways to connect into existing station buildings and footbridge. Including associated foundations, groundworks, modifications to existing buildings, support to existing footbridge and electrical installation (excluding lift installation).
Barrhead Station: The supply and installation of a new lift and motor room to Platform 1 and high level link.
