The Carlisle Northern Development Route (CNDR) project involves the construction of a new 8.25km single-carriageway bypass from the M6 Junction 44 to the A595 south west of Carlisle. The new road will cut journey times through Carlisle and significantly reduce the number of HGVs and cars travelling through the city centre daily.
Design and construction of the new route is being undertaken by Birse Civils (as principal contractor to the client Connect Roads), with associated rail works being undertaken by Birse Rail.
Birse Rail's scope of works involves the replacement of the existing 131m long multi-span Kingmoor Road bridge over the West Coast Main Line at Kingmoor Yard.
In order to maintain highway access across the West Coast Main Line during the construction of the replacement structure, a temporary Bailey bridge was constructed to the South of the existing bridge. The temporary bridge was completed and operational by early December 2009 to allow for the demolition of the original Kingmoor Road bridge during a 58.5 hour possession over Christmas.
The replacement structure, which is being built on the same alignment as the old bridge, comprises a four span steel girder construction with a composite steel and concrete deck.
